"Many missions, one voice."

Nonprofit organizations are at a pivotal time in their history. It's time to work together for the greater cause. "Many missions, one voice" is the motto of the Nonprofit Congress which convened for the first time in October 2006 in Washington, D.C. Their message was strong and the enthusiasm of 400 individuals from 38 states was enough to ignite the fire of thousands of nonprofit organizations. "It's time to come together for a common goal; it's time to carry out social change," was the common thread heard throughout their first meeting. It's been almost six months later and their enthusiasm is still on a roll.

The purpose of the Nonprofit Congress was to define their goals and then to take action in their individual states. Their three top priorities for this year are as follows:

  • Advocacy and Grassroots Community Activities
  • Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness, especially Accountability/Best Practices and Leadership
  • Public Awareness and Support of the Nonprofit Sector
  • "Emotion without action is irrelevant," stated Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace Prizewinner, who coordinated the International Campaign to Ban Landmines was their keynote speaker. Jody's message was clear and effective: "Let everyone take part in the plan and then keep everyone informed of what is happening." She also stated it wasn't necessary to appoint a "leader", but it was important to let those people who want to work, work. Jody's entire speech and the Nonprofit Congress Documentary can be viewed at http://nonprofitcongress.org.

I urge you to visit the Nonprofit Congress website to learn about their goals, to find out about what events are happening in your state, and to sign their "Declaration" so that you can join their mission to come together as one voice to spark reform. http://nonprofitcongress.org/declaration.htm

The plan is simple. The work is hard. Are you ready to work to make the world a better place for everyone? Get to work!
